Criminalistics is a forensic science that analyses physical evidence from crime scenes.

Our Criminalistics experts provide independent, objective analysis for NSW Police Force investigations into criminal matters including missing persons and illicit drug analysis.

Service overview

Our Criminalistics experts use state-of-the-art laboratories and robotics systems to examine evidence from crimes including:

  • break and enters/stolen motor vehicles
  • arson
  • homicide
  • kidnapping
  • serious assault
  • sexual assault
  • gang-related and organised crime, and
  • terrorism incidents.
Forensic Biology & DNA Analysis

Our specialist teams process approximately 100,000 DNA samples a year.

Their fast turnaround times support early-phase police investigations into missing persons and other matters.

They provide expert testimony in criminal and coronial matters.

Illicit Drug Analysis

Teams offer comprehensive testing, reporting and expert testimony for all aspects of illicit drug analysis, including rapid analysis for time-sensitive submissions and drug importations.

Chemical Criminalistics

The unit analyses ignitable liquid residue relating to arson investigations using highly specialised instruments.

It identifies chemicals in unknown substances and a range of evidence types including gunshot residue, paint, glass and fibres.
