Meet So Tran

Meet So Tran

Meet So Tran, affectionately known as ‘Uncle So’ and ‘Pappa So’ by those around him.

A Technical Officer, Uncle So is one of our frontline pathology collectors.

40 years of blood collection experience

With the nickname, “the man with the golden hands”, Uncle So’s skills are clearly top-notch.

He works across several of our Western Sydney public hospital sites at Westmead, Blacktown, Auburn and Mount Druitt.

Always keen to help people, Uncle So decided to train as a Registered Nurse but switched to blood collection, where he would meet different people every day and be part of their care team. He completed his studies and got his first job with us at Belmont Hospital. Later, he completed his Pathology Collection Certificate III while working with our team at Westmead.

With 40 years of experience on his side, his technical skills are second to none. There’s not much he’s not seen or dealt with before.

What it takes to be a good pathology collector

“To be a good collector, you need to be confident in yourself and your abilities. That’s how you reassure patients and families they’re in good hands. Plus, people think I’m funny, so I tell jokes to help relax those who might be anxious or worried.”

When asked what he loves about his job, Uncle So says, “I love my job, the patients and my team. I like people, I like helping them and I’m good with blood.”

Uncle So says one of the most satisfying parts of his role is: “When I see patients who are very upset or angry and I can calm them down. I believe happiness rubs off on others and I’m always in good spirits and positive. Sometimes all they need is someone to talk to and explain what’s happening.”

Everyone knows Uncle So. His easy-going and friendly personality makes people smile and puts everyone at ease.

photo of Uncle So at workVariety gives job satisfaction

“The variety keeps me going,” he says, “I work across a few hospitals and visit different wards, adults, kids plus the outpatient departments.”

Paediatric collections, especially babies, can be tricky but Uncle So thinks differently. “Babies aren’t difficult if you have good technique. Usually, if the parents stay nearby the baby doesn’t cry. But if they leave and move away the baby cries. I make sure I’m gentle and calm. When they see it’s all over, I see the parents smile and take a big breath.” Uncle So has found his happy place at work.

Everyone’s journey is unique

Born in Vietnam, Uncle So practised Buddhism and lived as a Monk at Temple for many years. Leaving when the war began, he spent time in a refugee camp in Malaysia before arriving in Sydney to start his new life at age 19.

At 32, he found his life partner, a Vietnamese Nun, now his wife. They married and settled down to start a family.

Outside of work, he’s active and likes to run. He’s held onto much of his Buddhist teaching and regularly practices Tai Chi and meditation. “It keeps me young.” Uncle So’s “tea group” is his time to chat about anything and everything over cups of steaming tea. “It’s my time to socialise, share and listen,” he says.

A humble, kind man, he’s also active in his neighbourhood. A local community leader, Uncle So gives his time and wisdom to younger generations as a mentor, encouraging them to live good, healthy and happy lives.

Now at 62 Uncle So has no plans to slow down anytime soon and recommends his career to others.

Farewell Michael Clough

Following a distinguished career at NSW Health and NSW Health Pathology spanning 20 years, Michael Clough is moving on to pursue new challenges and spend time with this family.

Michael is the Lead Discipline Scientist (Chemical Pathology, West, Rural and Regional) based at NSWHP’s ICPMR Westmead. He’s well known to many in the city and regional labs, and has always championed the professional development of up-and-coming scientists across the organisation.

In 2001, Michael was the first Network Scientist to be employed at Westmead ICPMR. He brought a wealth of scientific and management experience gained at our labs at Royal North Shore and Prince of Wales Hospitals as well as the private sector.

Over the course of his career at NSW Health Pathology’s ICPMR Westmead, Michael has had many highlights including:

  • The standardisation of Chemical Pathology instrumentation across what was then six different pathology services (Sydney South Western Pathology Service, Southern, ICPMR, Nepean, Central West Pathology Service and Orana) and covered the current 27 laboratories. Over time and thanks to the direction of Michael, we were able to establish common training, reporting, documentation, and quality systems. This enabled improved peer support and the ability to move trained staff to other laboratories as required. One of the major benefits to come out of this, was opening our Broken Hill laboratory with staff from across the network within a two-week period in 2004.
  • Being part of the team working though the logistics of currently rolling out new Chemical Pathology analyser equipment at 27 labs in Western Sydney, and rural and regional NSW.
  • Helping establish POCT testing in our rural and regional sites. The clinical units offering Arterial Blood Gas analysis (ABG) services were expanded across the metropolitan campuses and all were NATA accredited for the first time. In 2010, Michael introduced POCT to the regional sites with the support of the Southern and Murrumbidgee LHDs. This followed with services at Broken Hill, Neonatal Emergency Transport Service (NETS) and the provision of HbA1c testing for Diabetic and Pre-Admission clinics at Westmead and Dubbo. These initial steps have evolved into NSW Health Pathology’s statewide POCT service as we know it today.
  • Introducing a third-party quality control software package onto a network server for use by all laboratories. This was later updated to what we have now but across multiple disciplines.
  • Rationalisation of the Laboratory Information Management System build with a central build across all Chemical Pathology services. This was when the Cerner Millennium was implemented across all current Western Sydney, rural and regional sites. Rather than have a separate build for each chemistry laboratory, we had the same build and procedures across all sites. This enabled common report formats and reference intervals across the network.

However, Michael’s most valued achievement has been the scientific development and mentoring of staff.

With his help, more efficient procedures and improvements in service delivery have been achieved for Chemical Pathology. He’s been grateful for all the opportunities, support and friendship from staff across all levels around NSW.

While we are very sad to see Michael leave, we wish him all the best in his new endeavours.

Thank you for your dedication, innovation, friendship and passion for helping develop the professional skills of your colleagues.

Michael’s last day at NSW Health Pathology will be 14 July.

Dr Cliff Meldrum retires after 25 years of dedicated service

After more than 25 years of dedicated service and remarkable contributions, Dr Cliff Meldrum, Director of Genomics officially retires from NSW Health Pathology this week. We will miss his warm personality, approachability, willingness to mentor and guide others and unwavering dedication.

Cliff has been an integral part of NSWHP, playing a pivotal role in shaping our genomics service and its achievements. His tireless commitment to establishing our statewide sequencing service and providing training and education, as well as his wealth of knowledge and outstanding leadership have added so much to our organisation.

Genomics is moving quickly, both nationally and within NSW Health. Throughout his tenure, Cliff has spearheaded numerous ground-breaking genomics projects, paving the way for advancements in research and discovery.

Cliff has also contributed greatly to the field of genomics, serving as:
• Chair of the Molecular Genetics Society of the HGSA (prior to the formation of the ASDG),
• Principal Examiner in Genetics of the RCPA Faculty of Science,
• Assessor for the European Molecular Quality Network as well as NATA,
• Chair of the Translational Medicine committee and co-chair of the IT systems and Infrastructure committee for phases 1 and 2 of the NSW Health Genomics strategy, and
• member of the Australian Genomics national steering committee.

Cliff’s expertise, strategic vision and ability to navigate complex scientific challenges have earned him great respect amongst his peers and colleagues.

Beyond his professional achievements, Cliff’s warm personality, approachability and willingness to mentor and guide others made him an invaluable asset to NSWHP. He led by example and fostered a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Please join us in thanking Cliff for his unwavering dedication, outstanding achievements and lasting contributions to NSW Health Pathology. We wish you a very happy and enjoyable retirement.

Professor Roger Wilson retires after long, rewarding career

After taking some well-deserved extended leave, Professor Roger Wilson officially retires from NSW Health Pathology on Friday 30 June. We will miss his exceptional service, professionalism, friendship and dedication to NSW Health Pathology.

Roger has been a valuable member of NSW Health Pathology right from its inception and in the years preceding this within the former South Eastern Area Laboratory Services (SEALS) network.

As a founding member of the Strategic Leadership Team since NSW Health Pathology was created over ten years ago, Roger served as the Executive Director, Clinical, Quality and Safety, NSW State Pathology Controller for Emergency Management and as our inaugural Chief Pathologist.

Roger’s extensive knowledge in the field of pathology have played a pivotal role in the success of our public pathology services over decades and enhanced the standing of NSW Health Pathology in the broader profession and ensured a leadership role in professional forums and on national committees charged with setting policies and standards.

Some of Roger’s key achievements with NSWHP include:

  • Implementing an emergency management structure encompassing prevention, preparedness, response and recovery to manage and respond to many emergency incidents and the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Overseeing the build and operational management of the NSW Health Statewide Biobank, which continues to support research across the state through an automated storage facility for biospecimens including blood, tissue and DNA samples.
  • Developing our first Clinical Governance Framework, which supports all staff in making NSW Health Pathology’s care and services continuously and measurably better and safer for patients and communities and also a rewarding workplace for staff.
  • Leading our research support infrastructure, that has developed a research governance and support portfolio. This continues to mature in how we support research activities of our own experts and our partners.
  • The establishment of the NSW Health Pathology’s statewide Perinatal Postmortem Service, which helps hundreds of bereaved NSW families each year to receive timely and highly-specialised support, focused on sensitive, compassionate care at this most difficult time.
  • Being instrumental in the Quality Use of Pathology Program, which provides grants for projects that improve the management, delivery or use of Medicare pathology services.
  • Providing outstanding leadership for Public Pathology Australia (formerly known as the National Coalition of Public Pathology).

Roger’s unwavering dedication to quality and safety and to upholding the highest standards, coupled with his collaborative and respectful approach have contributed to a culture of continued improvement and excellence throughout NSW Health Pathology. It has also had a significant influence on improving the quality of patient care we deliver.

Roger – all of us at NSW Health Pathology will miss your exceptional service, professionalism, friendship and dedication to NSW Health Pathology.

We wish you a very happy and fulfilling retirement.

World leading pathologist documents his own cancer journey

Professor Richard Scolyer AO’s career has been dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Now he’s sharing with the world his own cancer journey after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour.

In late May 2023, Professor Richard Scolyer was being lauded by colleagues around the world. He had just received the Distinguished Pathologist Medal from the Australasian Division International Academy of Pathology (IAP).

The medal is awarded each year to a pathologist who has made an outstanding contribution to the discipline of anatomical pathology.

Although he wasn’t able to attend the awards ceremony in person as he was lecturing in Poland, Richard was congratulated by colleagues for his enormous contributions to pathology in Australasia and beyond.

NSW Health Pathology’s Senior Staff Specialist in Tissue Pathology and Diagnostic Oncology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Co-Medical Director at Melanoma Institute Australia, Richard Scolyer’s career has been dedicated to diagnosing melanoma and research to find new and effective treatments to save lives from the disease.

Richard provides a clinical consultation service for the diagnosis of difficult pigmented lesions, receiving over 2,000 cases from around the world each year.

But soon after receiving the prestigious award, Richard suffered a seizure and MRI scans later revealed a temporal lobe mass. Within days he was diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer, glioblastoma.

In a video posted to social media, Richard admitted to feeling scared, but said he was thrilled at the support he had received from friends and colleagues.

He revealed he intends to share his cancer journey with the wider community, hoping it will have a positive impact on those going through a similar journey.

A man lying in a hospital bed, with the side of his head bandaged, smiling.
Richard Scolyer just after undergoing surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Richard was upbeat as he spoke from a hospital bed on 21 June at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he has worked for 25 years, on the day of his surgery to remove the bulk of the tumour.

Six hours later, he appeared again, smiling at the size of his scar, thanking colleagues and assuring family that his memory was intact.

Richard, we wish you all the best for a full recovery. You and your family are in our thoughts as you take on this challenge.

Follow Richard’s journey here.

It’s World Blood Donor Day – consider donating!

Happy World Blood Donor Day to all those blood donors in our communities, for their selfless generosity and life-saving donations.

This year’s theme is “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often.”

It focuses on patients requiring life-long transfusion support and underlines the role every single person can play, by giving the valuable gift of blood or plasma.

It also highlights the importance of giving blood or plasma regularly to create a safe and sustainable supply of blood and blood products that can always be available so that all patients in need can receive timely treatment.

Here at NSW Health Pathology, our Transfusion teams manage the safe supply, storage and release of donor blood and blood products from our hospital laboratory blood banks.

We take great care and responsibility to ensure those precious donations get to those who need it most.

We help patients needing blood transfusions due to cancer, surgery, pregnancy and childbirth, anaemia, bleeding disorders, accident or trauma and more.

If you’d like to roll up your sleeves and donate blood, visit visit www.lifeblood.com.au, call 13 14 95 or download the Donate Blood app.
