The construction of a new NSW Health Pathology Department as part of the $790 million Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct (LHAP) redevelopment is centralising three levels of lab operations into a single floor.
It will be located closer to vital units such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Birthing Unit, Intensive Care Unit, operating theatres, and the Emergency Department, providing many workflow and collaboration benefits for patients, staff, and hospital services.
NSW Health Pathology Chief Executive Vanessa Janissen shared her excitement surrounding the project following a recent tour of the construction site.
“I really appreciated the opportunity to see the redevelopment and the progress on the pathology department,” Ms Janissen said.
“The lab space will uplift our team’s important work for the hospital and community.
“Well done to everyone involved in the design and delivery and I look forward to its commissioning.”
The Integrated Pathology Laboratory will have state-of-the art laboratory automation and analysers, which will streamline specimen handling, and improve turnaround times – giving patients and clinicians faster access to crucial results.
A new purpose-built Genomics Laboratory will also support the increasing demand for genomic information and testing.
NSW Health Pathology (NSWHP) services at Liverpool Hospital will relocate to the new Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct (LHAP) later this year.
There are two stages of the campus redevelopment, and the brand-new pathology laboratory is included in stage one. The old laboratory will be demolished as part of stage two. The LHAP is a $790 million redevelopment of Liverpool Hospital and a new education and research hub.
The redevelopment will provide Liverpool Hospital with expanded clinical services, public spaces, and car parking, integrated with research and teaching. Stage two of the project is due to be completed in 2027.
