NSW Health Pathology is the largest public pathology provider in Australia, and the preferred provider of pathology services to the NSW Health system. This allows us to offer an exciting and diverse range of roles from small country towns to the largest principal referral hospitals.
Our core laboratories are well-established and offer a comprehensive range of pathology services, including Chemistry, Haematology, Transfusion, and Flow Cytometry.
There’s a lot of continuing education that the organisation provides which I am very grateful for or I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today. We have that positive attitude, that flow throughout the lab. Everyone is part of the same team and we like to help each other whenever we can. My favourite part of my role is that it is a mix of on-bench and quality management. I like that the on-bench work allows me to keep up my chemistry skills.

Medical Laboratory Scientists manage a range of operational laboratory activities including scientific and technical training and the ongoing review, development and quality management of laboratory practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement.

The roles of our Medical Laboratory Scientists are as diverse as the clinical pathology disciplines in which they work. In a Microbiology lab you could be working on new tests for emerging pathogens. In an Anatomical Laboratory lab, you might perform dissection or work in cytology, helping to diagnose cancer. The opportunities are endless.

For those who take on more senior roles, there are research and teaching opportunities. And the learning doesn’t stop there for this career, with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia has a Faculty of Science for senior scientists working within the field of Pathology offering 4 pathways to Fellowship.
In a typical day I perform normal lab services – testing patient samples, getting results out. I’m involved in ensuring the lab meets national standards that the government requires and going above and beyond that. I like to think there is a person behind all these numbers… this person could be sitting here in the hospital waiting for their results to get diagnosed.

Anatomical pathologists are medical specialists with at least 12 years of training who examine organs, tissues and cells to diagnose specific diseases including cancer. The anatomical pathologist’s skills are fundamental to medical diagnosis, patient management and research.
