The Transfusion Group Training Program offers an alternative and standardised way of training that is collaborative, cost effective and efficient.
The traditional one-to-one transfusion training requires on average 152 to 228 hours of trainer time per trainee. In 2022, when 46 new staff members were in line for training, a new group training approach was needed that would have less impact on our services.
By integrating online theory lectures, self-managed tasks, weekly knowledge assessments, and the development of a training laboratory, the redesigned group training program significantly reduced trainer time per trainee to 47 to 58 hours – one third of that required in one-to one training.
The Transfusion Group Training Program demonstrates how changing internal processes to ensure our staff meet competency standards has a big impact in the way we deliver the highest quality services to our health system partners.
