Follow this procedure when collecting a water sample for disinfection by-products (DBP) analysis for a NSW Health project.
Sample container
- Use a 200 mL amber glass bottle containing ammonium chloride as preservative (100mg/L) with screw cap lined with a Teflon seal.
- These bottles are available from the Forensic & Analytical Science Service (FASS). Email [email protected] to order.
Label
- Use the yellow label supplied by the NSW Health Water Unit.
- Using a waterproof pen, record the sample details on the label.
- Ensure the outside surface of the container is dry before attaching the label to the sample container.
- A sample submission form is not required for approved project samples.
Collection tips
- Do not rinse the bottle prior to taking the sample.
- Fill the bottle to the brim leaving no air gap. Do not allow the sample to overflow.
- Seal the bottle with the lid containing the Teflon seal.
Transporting samples
- Pack the samples into an insulated container with enough freezer bricks to keep them cool (2–10oC) during transportation.
- Attach a copy of the address label to the insulated container.
Dispatch the samples to the Forensic and Analytical Science Service Lidcombe laboratories as soon as possible.
