Over the past 18 months, NSW Health Pathology has delivered nine new or refurbished laboratories across the state, with cutting-edge technology, faster testing and modern, fit-for-purpose facilities to benefit patients, clinicians and staff.
NSW Health Pathology is proud to be transforming pathology services across Sydney and regional NSW through a major program of new builds and extensive refurbishment of existing labs.
Since mid-2024, we have opened or are about to open new laboratories at:
• Liverpool
• Griffith
• Wyong
• Narrabri
• Moree
• Hawkesbury
• Cowra (due to open December 2025)
• Coffs Harbour (due to open December 2025)
• Dubbo (due to open early 2026)

The Coffs Harbour laboratory refurbishment.

But the investments don’t stop there. There are a number of other sites currently under construction including Ryde, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven (Nowra), Eurobodalla and Moree (part of the planned hospital redevelopment).
Looking forward, more upgrades are planned for Canterbury, Bankstown, Fairfield, Rouse Hill and a Statewide Pathology Hub at Westmead.
Opening a new laboratory is no small feat. Our teams often maintain testing services right up to, during and immediately after relocation, to ensure patients continue to receive quality care.
Each new laboratory is also required to undergo a rigorous accreditation by Australia’s leading accreditation organisation, NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities). These regular audits ensure all NSW Health Pathology’s laboratories meet the highest international standards.
Three of the new labs – Hawkesbury, Moree and Narrabri – have transitioned from other pathology providers to NSW Health Pathology this year. We are excited to be part of these communities and providing locals with access to high quality pathology testing and collection services.
As well as redeveloping our laboratories, we’ve been investing in advanced diagnostic technology, including point of care testing and high-tech automated chemistry analysers that are expanding capacity and speeding up turnaround times at many of the new labs.
Since 2023, NSW Health Pathology has invested $56 million to upgrade chemical pathology analysers across the state, one of the largest equipment replacement projects we’ve ever undertaken.
By replacing ageing chemical pathology analysers across NSW, we can provide new levels of automation which means a faster, more efficient service for patients and clinicians. Automation is key to being able to make best use of our people’s time and expertise, and this will ensure we can meet the changing, complex needs of patients.
What our people are saying
“We have a lovely new collections space, and the new lab is spacious and filled with lots of natural light. We also increased the lab’s operating hours to 24/7 to ensure we were meeting the needs of the community when the new hospital opened.”
- Jody Landy, Griffith lab manager
“I am excited for the opportunity to lead this new team and ensure the delivery of quality, safe and reliable services. I look forward to getting to know everyone at Hawkesbury.”
- Blessings Ndlovu, Hawkesbury lab manager
“Pathology is an essential support service for the Liverpool Hospital and the upgrade of pathology services is coming at a crucial time for the hospital. We are proud to be embracing new technologies and setting the benchmark in patient care for South Western Sydney communities, and the people of NSW.”
- Parth Nanavati, Senior Operations Manager South Western Sydney
These investments mean faster, more accurate results for clinicians and patients, improved access to pathology services in regional communities, and modern workplaces for our dedicated staff.
It’s all part of our commitment to delivering world-class pathology services for the people of NSW.
