Attracting the next generation of top pathologists is high on NSW Health Pathology’s list of priorities, particularly in hard to recruit fields like forensic and anatomical pathology.

Each year NSW Health Pathology holds events to give Junior Medical Officers (JMOs) a chance to consider a career in these disciplines.

More than 75 JMOs attended the July Meet & Greet event at Westmead to hear firsthand from the experts.

Medical Workforce Manager Sam Veasey said it was one of the largest number of participants to date.

“We engaged them in interactive activities and with presentations that included advice and encouragement from doctors at later stages of their training in anatomical or forensic pathology and senior pathologists,” Sam said.

Anatomical Pathology Training Coordinator, Associate Professor Lisa Parker said the training recruitment program typically attracts 55–65 aspiring AP and forensic pathologists each year.

“We believe awareness and interest in the program is growing which could explain why we are receiving more applications from JMOs each year,” Associate Professor Parker said.

“We work in close partnership with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia to ensure the events give JMOs the best opportunity to assess whether a future in pathology will suit them.”

The Medical Workforce Team has more events planned for 2026 that will focus on the current cohort of AP and forensic trainees.
